๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Part 3 โ€” Insurance Decoded

The One Thing You Cannot Skip

I learned the hard way. Three days into a yoga retreat in Bali, I stepped off a curb wrong and heard a pop. My ankle swelled to the size of a grapefruit. The local clinic was clean but basic. The X-ray cost $45. The MRI they recommended? $300. The orthopedic specialist in Denpasar? Another $150. By the time I was cleared to fly home, I had spent $890 out of pocket. My travel insurance would have covered all of it for $62.

That was 2019. Since then, I have made it my mission to understand travel insurance inside and out. Not the marketing fluff โ€” the real coverage, the real exclusions, the real claims process.

What Coverage Do You Actually Need?

The Non-Negotiables

  • Emergency Medical ($100k+ minimum) โ€” Hospital stays, surgery, and emergency treatment abroad. In the USA, a single ER visit can exceed $10,000.
  • Medical Evacuation ($100k+ minimum) โ€” Transport to the nearest adequate hospital or repatriation. Evacuation from Bali to Singapore costs $25,000+. From Costa Rica to the USA, $75,000+.
  • Trip Cancellation (100% of prepaid costs) โ€” Most retreats require full payment 30-60 days in advance. If you get sick or a family emergency arises, you can lose thousands.
  • Lost/Delayed Baggage ($1,000+) โ€” Replacement of essential items if your luggage is lost or delayed 12+ hours.

The Nice-to-Haves

  • Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) โ€” Reimburses 50-75% of costs even for non-covered reasons. Expensive (adds 40-60% to premium) but invaluable for high-cost retreats.
  • Adventure Sports Coverage โ€” Essential if your retreat includes hiking, surfing, scuba, or motorbiking.
  • Pre-existing Condition Waiver โ€” Covers flare-ups of conditions you already have. Only available if you buy within 14-21 days of your initial deposit.

Three Costly Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Buying insurance too late. Most benefits โ€” especially pre-existing condition waivers and CFAR โ€” require purchase within 14-21 days of your initial trip deposit.
  2. Not reading the exclusions. Yoga is generally covered as "recreational activity," but aerial yoga, acro-yoga, or hot yoga in extreme heat may be excluded. Scooter riding in Bali is often excluded unless you have a valid motorcycle license.
  3. Underinsuring medical evacuation. A $50,000 limit sounds generous until you need evacuation from a remote island. Get at least $250,000.

My Experience Filing Claims

I have filed two claims with SafetyWing. Both were approved within 48 hours and paid within a week. The online process is genuinely simple. But read the policy wording carefully โ€” I lost $300 on physiotherapy because I did not realize there was a session limit.

Key lesson: The cheapest policy is rarely the best. The best policy is the one that covers what you actually plan to do.
